Liam Broady battled into the Quarter-final of the Lexus Glasgow Challenger after edging a tight contest with Number 4 seed Dimitar Kuzmanov.

The Bulgarian, who had won their only previous contest, was in good form and held comfortably in the opening game to show there would be no repeat of the comfortable passage that Broady had enjoyed in round one. But in the match’s fifth game Broady, with groundstrokes moving the Bulgarian from side to side, racked up the first break of the match.

Just a few minutes later, it was all square as Kuzmanov broke back and despite Broady bringing up another two break points in the ninth game which the experienced Kuzmanov fought off, the match entered a tie-break.

Broady again drew first blood, with a mini-break for 3-2, only to be instantly pegged back again, but from 3-3, Broady took control, winning four straight points to chalk up the opener 7-6 (3).

It appeared that a close contest was going the way of the Stockport left hander when he broke again for 3-2 and two holds later, he was serving for the match at 5-3. However, Kuzmanov wasn’t going without a fight and put pressure on Broady with a mixture of strong groundstrokes and deft net work to record a break when Broady pushed a forehand just wide.

Back on serve Broady stopped the rot by holding for 6-5 and then secured two match points when Kuzmanov pushed a forehand long under pressure. However he fought out of that tight spot to secure another tie-break.

Again, Broady secured the early advantage to lead 2-0, only to be pegged back, and Kuzmanov then had two serves whilst leading 5-4. However a double fault betrayed that even the unshakeable Bulgarian was feeling nervy and a winner put Broady back in the driving seat serving at 6-5. A backhand passing shot winner closed that door, and two points later Kuzmanov’s escape act looked complete as he levelled the match by winning the tie-break 8-6.

The opening game of the final set was always going to be crucial and Broady shook off the disappointment of drawing level by securing the second of two break points.

Again, Kuzmanov kept swinging, bringing up break points at 15-40, and then after Broady hasd seved the second of those with an ace, another break point came and went. The roar that went up as Broady’s second ace of the game put him 2-0 up revealed what a significant moment it was and just a couple of minutes later, another break put Broady 3-0 up.

It was a lead he never looked like surrendering and ultimately the 6-2 win was fairly comfortably secured as Broady served out his final two service games without dropping a point to leave a final 7-6 (3) 6-7 (6) 6-2 result

This match followed a quite remarkable 6-0 6-0 victory over the 318 ranked Spaniard Miguel Damas. The rout, which was Broady’s first ever ‘double bagel’ at Challenger level was built on a combination of groundstroke dominance and clutch play at crucial times.

Damas actually won 17 of the 51 points in the first set but despite having six game points and three break point opportunities in the first set, he lost them all.

The second set ran away in no time at all as the beleaguered Spaniard had no answer to Broady’s onslaught and won just six points as he fell away to defeat.

In the quarter finals Broady will face Norbert Gombos. The 35 year old Slovak, whose career high ranking of 80 was reached in 2017, has won both of the previous meetings between the two in straight sets, both in America in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

A stunning run of success across 6 tournaments in 8 weeks saw a revitalised Liam Broady finish 2025 in glorious style to fly up the ATP rankings.

Going into the first of the series of events in Budapest, Hungary, Liam was ranked at 542 in the global rankings after a difficult period with injuries, but after a significant training block he was able to hit the ground running, and stormed to his second tournament victory of the 2025 season.

After battling through a tight three setter in an opening round win over Georgia’s Zura Tkemaladze, Liam recorded straight set wins to take him to the final. And after dropping the opening set of the final to homegrown Hungarian Matyas Fuele a relentless Broady won the second and third sets 6-0 to claim the title.

Next, he moved to Hurghada, Egypt where after three straight sets victories he went out in the semi finals to Hungary’s Peter Makk. A week later, he went one better. After three routine straight sets wins, Liam battled past South African Kris Van Wyk, before falling in the final to fellow countryman Toby Samuel.

A return to Budapest a week later, saw Liam back in the winners enclosure. After gaining revenge for the Egyptian semi final defeat by comprehensively dismantling Pater Makk in the second round, Liam again faced Hungarian Matyas Fuele in the final, dropping just three games on the way to lifting the trophy.

After a week’s break, the rollercoaster continued as Liam raced through five straight sets victories to lift the Trophy in Rodez in the South of France, defeating Frenchman Arthur Nagel, 6-4 6-4 to rack up the third tournament win in just six weeks.

A week later, a few hundred miles further North in Villiers les Nancy Broady again made the final having repelled last week’s finalist Nagel, this time in the semi-final. However, having roared to a first set 6-2 win in the final over France’s Robin Natry, Liam was pegged back going down 2-6 4-6 to finish as runner-up.

Broady edges out Krutykh in 3rd set thriller

Liam Broady recorded his first main tour win of 2023 as he edged out determined Ukrainian Oleksii Krutykh in a thriller in Doha, Qatar.

There was no sign of the drama that was to follow when Broady coasted to a 6-0 opening set verdict. Broady was in commanding form early on, dropping just three points on serve and taking three of the four break points he brought up to take a stranglehold on the match.

Despite Krutykh offering more resistance in the second set saving a break point before recording his first game of the match for 1-1 and then saving three in the set’s sixth game it seemed a matter of time before Broady’s pressure would tell. However emboldened by his escape in the set’s sixth game and with his power from the back of the court starting to make inroads, the Ukrainian, who qualified for a grand slam for the first time in Australia this year, brought up and then took a break point to open up a 4-3 lead.

Broady broke straight back but Krutykh broke again and then served out to take the match into a final set.

And it seemed the Ukrainian was now firmly in the ascendancy when he broke for 2-1 and then consolidated with a solid hold for a 3-1 lead. This topsy-turvy encounter had another twist when Broady reeled off four games in a row to move into a 5-3 lead- only for Krutykh to once again break and then hold as the match stormed towards a final set breaker.

A good-natured contest in which both players had acknowledged their opponents good shots ultimately fell Broady’s way as a great forehand passing shot secured an early mini-break and when it was followed by a wayward forehand from Krutykh, the match was almost won. Broady finally brought up 5 match points and despite Krutykh saving the first with a winner, Broady took the verdict at the second time of asking to set up a mouth-watering tie against former world number Daniil Medvedev.

Earlier Broady had qualified for Doha with a routine opening victory over Qatari wildcard Mubarak Shannan Zayid 6-1 6-1 and then an impressive 6-4 6-3 win over Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili.
